I’m not sure. My first thought is that the subjunctive was used, so even the writer was uncertain. If God does exist, must he answer to his creation? I do not think so, at least, that is what I was taught.

Yeah, I had the same thought as you, kind of like, “why are we so quick to blame God for everything that causes us pain or that we don’t like? Simplistic? I’m reading a GREAT book about all this right now, called “The Reason for God” by Tim Keller.
